At Tuesday’s meeting the Carbondale City Council heard an update on the Southern Illinois Multimodal Station.

Carbondale selects design team for Southern Illinois Multi-Modal station

CARBONDALE (WSIL) The City of Carbondale has selected Design Works and hmb Architects LLC to design its new downtown transportation center, which will be known as the Southern Illinois Multi Modal Station (SIMMS).  In November 2019, the City was awarded a $13.9 million dollar grant for the design and construction of this project through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) program. In December 2020, the IDOT Transit Improvement Program contributed an additional $2.8 million dollars towards the project.  The new transportation center will be constructed in downtown Carbondale on the east side of South Illinois Avenue.

IDOT Announces Additional $300,000 in Funding for SIMMS : CEG

Wed January 06, 2021 - Midwest Edition #1 City of Carbondale The city of Carbondale has announced that the Illinois Department of Transportation, Office of Intermodal Project Implementation (IDOT-OIPI), will provide an additional $300,000 in state funding for the Southern Illinois Multi-Modal Station (SIMMS) project. The additional funds boost IDOT s contribution to SIMMS to $2.8 million. The city of Carbondale has been working with IDOT s transit office since 2015 to plan for the project, and appreciate their long-term commitment to the city. Together with our BUILD grant that was awarded in 2019, the city has now secured $16.8 million in funding for SIMMS, said Gary Williams, city manager.
