North Carolina Schools are Resegregating
Pilar Mageau has a knack for getting her students singing.Â
The Spanish teacher found that music was an easy way to get her classes interested in the lessons she had planned. During her Spanish 2 classâs clothing unit she blasted the song âRopa Cara,â or âExpensive Clothes.â The high schoolers couldnât help but hum along.Â
Mageauâs strategy for forming connections between her students and the language she teaches hasnât changed in her 11-year career in Gaston County Schools. Her classroom has always been fun, warm and welcoming.Â
The only thing that has changed is her location. Mageau began teaching at Bessemer City High School, a school of 600 in Bessemer City, North Carolina. Then, eight years ago, Mageau moved 30 minutes down the road to South Point High School in Belmont.Â
His life was taken by a rare form of cancer named NUT Carcinoma.
But while his life was ended by the disease, his family and friends are determined that his memory, his spirit, and his passion will live on, serving as an inspiration to others facing challenges in their own lives. Adam was a warrior, read his Gazette obituary, a hero, a perfect son, the best big brother, an amazing friend, and the most beautiful soul. He was genuine, kind, and had a heart of gold.
Adam s legacy will be the focus of a combination blood drive and bake sale to be held on Saturday, May 8, in the parking lot of City Church, located off South New Hope Road in Gastonia.
New Chick-fil-A coming to South Point Road
Chick-fil-A confirmed the new location but declined to share a timeframe on its possible construction or opening.
Belmont Planning officials said Tuesday the popular chicken chain is working to build its new location at 925 South Point Road. That s a currently vacant outparcel portion of the Belmont Town Center property which includes Harris Teeter.
It also sits across from South Point High School.
Peyton Ratchford, a Belmont planning technician, said Tuesday the office has approved sketch plans for the project and are reviewing construction plans for the site.
A sign permit was also applied for in December but that has yet to be approved, Ratchford said. A zoning permit for the project has yet to be approved.
