The following changes are expected to go into effect on Monday:
The Henderson Expressway eastbound toward East Providence will be reduced from two lanes to one lane from the access road from Waterman Avenue in Providence to Massasoit Avenue in East Providence.
The Henderson Expressway westbound toward Providence just prior to South Angell Street in Providence will be reduced from two lanes to one lane.
Massasoit Avenue in East Providence in both directions will be reduced from two lanes to one lane at the Henderson Bridge interchange, between Wilmarth Avenue and Dexter Road.
RIDOT said the lane closures will allow the department to build connector roads and other changes in effort to advance a traffic shift on the bridge in mid-January.
Some travel lanes near the Henderson Bridge in East Providence and Providence will close starting Monday as part of a $84.4-million bridge replacement project, according to the Rhode Island Department of Transportation.
The state is replacing the 2,000-foot bridge, which carries traffic over the Seekonk River, with a narrower structure that will include a shared-use bike path. It will also open up about 25 acres of land on either side of the bridge.
The project will eliminate the Henderson Expressway, the short freeway on the east side of the bridge that was never connected to Route 195 as once intended, and the elevated ramps that connect to it.
