The South Africa National Defence Force (SANDF) will be deployed in the Western Cape province to assist police with enforcing lockdown regulations. Western Cape Health Department Head Keith Cloete explained the details.
“The military will support the law enforcement efforts and the law enforcement agencies are working with the military about what exactly that deployment will look like, where and how it will happen,” he said. Earlier, the Western Cape Department of Health had said that models tracking patterns of COVID-19 infections showed that the province had officially entered the peak of the second wave.
The province now has over 41,000 active cases and the Department said hospitalisations and mortality data showed increases with early signs of these rates stabilising.
