loss and discovery in the search for the 52 american submarines that disappeared during world war ii. frederick cashell was a navy engineer with a dangerous job, test-running submarines during world war ii but to his daughter, helen cashell-baldwin, he was just daddy. i thought he was popeye because he was a sailor man when did you first learn that something was wrong? when a couple of naval officers came to our house. reporter: the uss r-12 submarine her father was on had disappeared in the florida straits. i found myself looking for him. because there was never a funeral. there was nothing. reporter: nothing until 70 years later a discovery by ocean explorer tim taylor, who found the r-12 on the bottom of the ocean. it was not like any other discovery i d ever made. there were 42 souls on board. reporter: taylor built a website and announced he was looking for surviving relatives.
