her relationship to her mother was a lot more problematic. catherine was a southern belle. she was a woman that had come from georgia, swept off her feet by the cosmopolitan hearst heir. i wouldn t call her snobby, but she had an upper class kind of attitude. her mother wanted patty to do well in school, come out in society, go to college. but basically lead her mother s life. she was in rebellion against some of the strictures her mother in particular imposed on her like convent schools. she loathed convent schools. and she got thrown out of several of them. she wanted independence. she wanted to become an adult was really what it was.
