coal is coming back. clean coal is coming back. 100%. clean coal, beautiful, clean coal. we have ended the war on beautiful, clean coal. no other environmental issue probably fires up president trump more than coal. beautiful, clean coal as he calls it. but researchers and scientists that we talked to say that clean coal is a fallacy. that s because the smokestacks that you see behind me, they re emitting harmful chemicals like nitrogen dioxide and mercury, and those can be swept miles away. people around the area are vulnerable. another thing that comes out is sulfur dioxide. that s often invisible. they are microscopic particles
severe weather. and hurricanes around flooding, wildfires, drought and they cause crops and wild stock to suffer. here s where the results come in, the report found when there s more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, the quality in certain nutrients decreases and fundamental production adds to the problem as well. the panel notes agriculture and other land uses make up about 13% of the world s carbon dioxide emissions making for a complicated and vicious cycle. so the question is what is the solution? to turn to someone we know on these issues, bill nye, the science guy. thank you for being with us. this is important, yes. when we think about climate change we re thinking about industries and smoke stacks and things like that. but if we want to change this on a massive scale, it does have to include our thoughts about food and production.
what do you have? let me run through the economy right now. if the president didn t keep on saying he had the best economy in the history of the world, we could tell you it s not a terrible economy. january, 304,000 net new jobs created. for all of 2018, we had 2.7 million jobs created. it s good. we had this kind of number in 2015. so it hasn t you know, it s been seen before, but this is actually pretty good. wages, up 3.2% in january. that s not adjusted for inflation, but inflation is not very high right now. so we re getting to the right place after years and years of stagnant wages. we re seeing the largest increase in wages year over year since 2008. so that s good. industrial production. this is trucks that you see at the port of long beach or newark or houston. it s smokestacks, things being built. that s up 4% in december compared to last year. i will remind you n 2014, we had a good year on that too. so it s good. not the best in history. this is a problem. the stock mar
candidate trump made that s not panning out. in fact, experts tell us that his guarantee to save the american coal industry was absurd to begin with. it was never going to happen. now the reality, more coal-powered electric plants have closed in two years of trump s presidency than during president obama s entire first term. people who make their living in coal say they just want straight talk from the president, and they re not getting it. here s cnn s bill weir. reporter: across america more and more coal-fired smokestacks are smoke free. the power plants beneath them, cold the mines that once fed them, abandoned. but families let themselves believe a coal comeback was on the way thanks to promises like this. we are putting our great coal miners back to work.
