Caribou surviving | Sault This Week

Article content A small group of dedicated scientists, researchers, and activists continue their years- long work to conserve and restore the Lake Superior caribou population. In 2018, after several months of pressure from the conservationists, the Ontario government relocated some of the last caribou from Michipicoten Island to the Slate Islands and Caribou Island. Gordon Eason, a now-retired biologist, said both of those populations have since grown. “We’ve heard estimates of 25 to 30 caribou on the Slates now,” Eason told Sault This Week, adding, prior to the relocation the Slate Island population was down to just two males. “We haven’t got an exact population estimate for Caribou Island, but we know all the original animals have survived and they are having calves. There are likely around 15 caribou out there now.”
