Softball team advances to NCAA championship
The UNG softball team clinched the NCAA Southeast Regional title with 4-0 and 3-1 victories against Lincoln Memorial University on May 22 at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium at Lynn Cottrell Park.
For the first time since 2018, the University of North Georgia (UNG) softball team is headed to the NCAA Division II championship.
As the No. 4 seed in the Elite Eight, UNG will begin the double-elimination event at 3:30 p.m. May 27 against fifth-seeded Biola University in Denver, Colorado. Live coverage links and ticket information will be available on the UNG Athletics website in the coming days.
North Georgia pitcher Kylee Smith, a first-team at-large selection, became the 19
th four-time NFCA All-American in Division II. Additionally, she is now in elite company with CSUN pitcher Debbie Dickman (1987-90), Ashland outfielder Sunny Litteral (1996-99) and Lock Haven pitcher Kristin Erb (2006-09) as the fourth Division II student-athlete to earn four first-team honors.
Smith captured Peach Belt Pitcher of the Year accolades for the fourth straight season. She played an instrumental role in the NightHawks’ seventh straight PBC title and sixth berth into the national championship tournament.
Missouri Western second baseman Sydni Hawkins was the lone unanimous first-team selection. The MIAA Player of the Year led the league in hitting (.483) and on-base percentage (.522), setting new program marks by 53 and 56 points, respectively.

The UNG softball team won the Peach Belt Conference championship on May 15 and begins NCAA Southeast Regional play on May 20 at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium at Lynn Cottrell Park.
The University of North Georgia (UNG) softball team won its seventh straight Peach Belt Conference (PBC) tournament title and is the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional.
Ranked second nationally, UNG secured its latest PBC championship with a 3-1 victory May 15 against eighth-ranked Young Harris College at Haines & Carolyn Hill Stadium at Lynn Cottrell Park in Dahlonega, Georgia.

To be clear, these are my rankings, and mine alone. I take a variety of factors into account, including: overall record, record against ranked teams, NFCA rankings, winning streaks, losing streaks, head-to-head matchups and team statistics.
1. Augustana (SD) (21-3)
The Vikings are 9-1 in their last 10 games and 6-1 against top 25 opponents this year. Offensively, Augustana (SD) is led by senior outfielder Kendall Cornick, whose batting average of .519 ranks first on the team. She also leads the Vikings with 41 hits and has driven in 23 runs. Cornick is one of five Augustana (SD) hitters that are currently batting over .300
Karen Louise Smith
Karen Louise Smith, 78, passed away in her sleep on Saturday, March 13, 2021, at her home in Vienna, West Virginia.
She was born May 5, 1942, in Elizabeth, WV, a daughter of the late Neva Cain Bennett and Encil Davis.
Karen was preceded in death by her mother, Neva Bennett; and her brother, Mike Davis.
She is survived by her loving children, Beth Ann Smith and Michael Smith, as well as her beloved grandchildren, Zoe Smith, Kylee Smith, Carly Smith and Lilly Smith. She also leaves behind her dearest sisters, Ann West and Debbie Buckhannon; and her brothers, Jon and Mark Davis, whom she adored.
