Alaskan named to White House environmental justice council April 8th 11:54 am | Alex DeMarban, Anchorage Daily News     An Alaska grandmother who has devoted much of her life to fighting military and industrial pollution will serve on the White House s newly created advisory council to address environmental justice. Vi Waghiyi, raised in Savoonga on St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, will be one of 26 members on the White House Environmental Justice Advisory Council, the White House announced last week. This position is not only a voice for our Sivuqaq Yupik people or the communities in the Norton Sound region, Waghiyi, 62, said last week. It will be a voice for Alaska and Arctic and Indigenous people. We are generally never at the table when decisions are made for us miles and miles away.
