we are we are safe. so i feel lucky. do you want to fly again? are you scared? i will fly again. very lucky, indeed. she crawled out of the damaged plane, through a hole near her seat. she says carrying her son to the closest ambulance. live from san francisco international airport, claudia, what went wrong is still a mystery, though, correct? reporter: it is, heather. and it could be many, many months before we know why the aircraft ran in to trouble. investigators with the ntsb saying minutes before it crash landed there was no indication that anything was wrong but then they say just seconds before it attempted to set down on that runway, the flight data recorder shows that the plane s air speed was too low. a call from a crew member to increase speed was made seven seconds before impact. and then an attempt to abort the landing went terribly wrong.
the wing section mostly intact. but we have seen other parts on the runway and scattered about the airport there on the runway. what you re looking at now is a picture taken from a passenger who was fleeing this plane shortly after it crash landed there. we don t know how many people were on board the plane, how many other people were hurt. we don t know of anything else, any fatalities, anything right now. the coast guard upon asking them about a report that they were conducting a search and that a body had been found, they said they cannot confirm. they said we know there has been a helicopter launched and we are assisting the responding agencies, but other than that, nothing has been confirmed at this time. so, this is what we know. a horrific situation coming out of san francisco right now, where people possibly may be injured. we don t know yet. and then again, everyone may have gotten off of this airplane safely with possibly minor
coming from the opposite end of the plane unclear poum people may have been on board this boeing 777. this is a monster of a flight generally from soul, south carolina, usually very packed, oftentimes just two flights a day. i m sorry? all right. now we have the flight number, 214 from seoul, south korea, to san francisco. go ahead, richard. it was asiana 214 which left incheon local time at around 17:04 in south korea time. 5:04. scheduled to arrive a few hours ago, a 777 200 lr twin jet. we know more about the aircraft itself. the plann ened distance of the flight was just over 5,500 miles before it crash landed. we don t know whey.
it doesn t look like anyone is moving frantically at the scene there. that s the good news there. you would expect to see frantic movement if people were inside and injured and in danger. we re not seeing that at this point but, rene, it s still very early on. it s still very early on. it still is. we re still waiting to hear more. thank you, rene, if you get any information from the ntsb or the faa, update us. but i want to tell you are looking at this incredible pictures, they are coming out of san francisco international airport. i don t need to tell you what s going on. look at your screen. this is a large commercial aircraft. it crash landed a short time ago at the san francisco international airport, a boeing 777. with no doubt at least scores of people on board this airplane. we don t know exactly how many people on board. these are some of the pictures you re looking at now from people who ran off this airplane, escaped trying to escape with their lives and now they
sides. the debris field being so early on the runway, potentially even before the runway. that will be a key question that the investigators are going to ask. why was the airplane on the ground so early? that s much earlier than it should have been. we should note also, this plane we re told, asiana airlines flight 214. it left seoul yesterday about 4:35 in the afternoon. it was scheduled to arrive. scheduled to arrive in san francisco at 11:15 local time. so that would be about 2:15 eastern time. we re told that it crash landed shortly before that scheduled landing. captain cox, when you ve landed at san francisco in the past, how does landing at this particular airport compared to landing at other airports? is it more or less difficult? is it about the same?
