Form One admission: Chaos, congestion in rush for places

THE STANDARD EDUCATION Form One students endure a chilly morning and long lines to be admitted at Kapsabet Boys. [Edward Kosut, Standard] A major crisis is looming as secondary schools struggle to accommodate the high number of students in order to meet the government’s 100 per cent primary to secondary transition policy. Other pupils in the countryside were yesterday staring at the possibility of failing to join secondary school due to lack of fees as parents face hard economic times. In Nyanza and Western, most schools reported high turn-out of Form One students. For instance, Maseno School in Kisumu County said his school expected to admit 650 students, 100 more than last year.

Curtain falls on Nyagarama's illustrious career in public service Curtain falls on Nyagarama

THE STANDARD By Standard Team | December 19th 2020 at 00:00:00 GMT +0300 The curtains yesterday fell on Nyamira Governor John Nyagarama, ending an illustrious career in public service where he served as teacher and tea director before rising to be a political stalwart in the larger Gusii region. Nyagarama, 74, was elected in 2013 after unsuccessfully trying to clinch the West Mugirango parliamentary seat on two occasions. President Uhuru Kenyatta, ODM leader Raila Odinga, Deputy President William Ruto, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Council of Governor’s chairman Wycliffe Oparanya yesterday led Kenyans in paying tribute to Nyagarama. “As a nation, death has robbed us of a gifted leader whose primary mission was to transform the lives of the residents of Nyamira through his county government’s development initiatives,” President Kenyatta said.
