Warriors Lead Superconference; Top Ten in State On Boards

Warriors Hold Off Huskies in First Round

Two evenly matched area boys’ basketball teams met up in Riverside on Friday to kick off the class 1A districts and WACO did enough to move on with a 55-52 win over Highland. With the game tied at 31 all after three, the Warriors came out hot in the fourth to build an 11 point lead. The Huskies did battle back to make it a one possession game, but the road Warriors hung on for the playoff victory. WACO Head Coach Paul Kissell credited his team’s ability to handle Highland’s defensive pressure. “We knew it was going to be a tough matchup going into it and a big key was to be able to handle pressure. They came out in a press and were trapping every pass. For our younger players to step up and handle that intensity the entire game was a big reason for our success.”

Warriors Win Area Battle Over Lions

In an all-KCII area showdown Monday in Lone Tree, the WACO boys basketball team got their first road victory of the season 56-45 over the Lions. The Warriors led 12-7 after the first quarter and 24-18 at half. The offenses came together for 37 points in the third quarter after halftime adjustments, but WACO still led 42-37 going to the fourth. Down the stretch, the Warriors proved to be too much and sealed the win. The Warriors controlled the paint, outrebounded Lone Tree by 16 and blocking seven Lion shots. For WACO, Simeon Reichenbach went double double with 15 points and 16 rebounds. Hunter Hughes had 12 points. Aiden Forbes led Lone Tree with 15 points. The Warriors are now 2-15 on the year, Lone Tree remains winless at 0-14.

Warriors Drop Two with Falcons

The task at hand was a tall one for the WACO basketball teams on Friday when they faced off with West Burlington squads sitting on top of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference South Divisions and the Warriors fell in a pair of contests.  The Warrior girls were in striking distance against the Falcons trailing just 32-31 at half. An 18-10 third quarter proved to be enough to keep WACO at arm’s length and the Falcons (16-1) came out on top 62-54. McKenna Marlow led all scorers with 21 points. WACO’s Ellah Kissell managed 18 points, Grace Coble had 14, and Morgan Graber 14.
