LUDHIANA: High drama was witnessed outside the office of cabinet minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu on Wednesday, when leaders and workers of Shiromani Akali Dal gathered there to protest to seek arrest of Lok Insaaf Party MLA Simarjit Singh Bains, who has been booked in a rape case.
The Akali leaders alleged that the Congress government has failed to take timely action against Bains, as earlier there was a delay in the registration of the case and now the cops were not arresting him. The protesters alleged that Ashu was saving Bains.
Heavy police force was deployed around the residence and the office of the cabinet minister for controlling the protesters. The situation turned tense when agitators tried to break the barricades and the cops used force and resorted to cane charge to stop them from crossing the line.

Lok Insaaf Party chief and MLA Simarjit Singh Bains booked for rape.
LUDHIANA: Lok Insaaf Party chief and MLA Simarjit Singh Bains has been booked for allegedly raping a 44-year-old woman. Six others, including his brothers, Karamjit Singh and Paramjit Singh Pamma, have been booked for criminal conspiracy.
The FIR was lodged on July 10, but the Ludhiana police kept it under wraps till Monday. It was registered on the orders of a local court issued on July 7, stating that a criminal case should be lodged without any further delay.
The accused have been identified as Atam Nagar MLA Simarjit Singh Bains, his brothers, Karamjit Singh and Paramjit Singh Pamma; workers, Baljinder Kaur, Jasbir Kaur Bhabhi and Sukhchain Singh; and PA Gopi Sharma. The FIR was lodged under sections 376 (rape), 354 (sexual harassment), 354-B (sexual assault), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.
