Welcome to our Design Issue. While in-person gatherings of the international design community, in Milan and beyond, may still be months away, there’s a host of launches that leave us eager with excitement. Showcasing the unflagging creativity of designers around the world, this issue is a celebration of the inspiring ideas, exhibitions and products to come.
The legendary Hella Jongerius gives us an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of her upcoming solo show at Berlin’s Gropius Bau, which explores experimental weaving techniques, and graces our limited-edition subscriber cover. The show includes live elements: among them a participatory installation inviting visitors to spin a yarn from recycled textile waste, and four looms working in tandem to create large-scale, 3D-woven objects. Growing up, my mom always made a fuss about what we wore to church; she wanted our congregation to see my brother and me looking picture-perfect. Even back then, I instinctively knew that, as a Black girl, I didn’t have the luxury of being anything but the best. I was also aware of the fact that looking put together at all times was about more than vanity it was a necessity, and one less thing that could be weaponized against me in a world that doesn’t give a shit about Black women.

Lighting Matches, and embarking on a solo UK tour.
Now, Grennan has teamed up with American super-brand Tommy Hilfiger for its Spring/Summer 2021 campaign. Fronted by a diverse cast of activists, such as
Pose s Indya Moore and singer-songwriter Mogli, the project lays focus on social change and inclusivity, two causes that are incredibly important to Grennan.
