steve patterson is in colorado springs with the latest for us. steve, i understand that you managed to speak to a bartender who is in the club when this shooting started. what did he tell you? yeah, that is exactly right eamonn. and i think in the next few days we are going to learn a whole lot more about the suspects, the victims of course, but right now, day one, it is all about the people who are inside that club that experienced this terrible ordeal. one of them, his name was michael anderson, a bartender. he was telling me that it was a normal night, there was a drag show, everybody was having fun and there are some dancing. and then those four shots rang, out and they almost sounded like part of the song so people did not first fully, which of course further led to the horror. unfortunately though, michael was fortunately i should say, michael was able to get some cover. he told me exactly how he got, there and how close he came to seeing that shooter face to
know, in the times we needed it. reporter: and the need has never been greater. he and his partners officers darren graf and michael lodesky were leading the 4th of july parade whether the shots rang outs. this is our town, this is our community, we love these people you know. so to see these things happen to the town we re sworn to protect is not something that sits well. reporter: do you think he made a difference that day? oh yeah, absolutely. bringing comfort to the community and the officers. a simple pet, hanging out for a minute kiss on the face whatever he does he can really just kind of shift your mood and shift your m mindset. he likes seeing the school kids. reporter: once a malnourished stray vinny duke is helping the community find some peace. kris van cleave, cbs news, highland park illinois. o donnell: hardworking dog.
victims that adds another layer of grief. as americans across the country celebrated the fourth of july, shots rang out monday from a rooftop in highland park. a suburb north of chicago. it was the loudest thing i ve heard that s not like natural. it was a lot and it was just endless. reporter: on the ground, this video shows the chaos as people who attended the parade ran for their lives. at least six people were killed. and more than two dozen sent to hospitals, some in serious condition. their ages ranging from 8 to 85 years old. of the 25 who came in with gunshot wound, 19 of those individuals were able to be treated and actually discharged home, after they had had their full medical evaluation and treatment. several others did arrive in more serious conditions and did have to be admitted.
marvin moore, also a teacher, joins us now. marvin, good morning to you. good morning. steve: what happened to your friend? my friend was recently murdered in d.c. steve: what were the circumstances? that, i m unclear of. i do know that he was outside an area that he normally would have been in. shots rang, family call the call. steve: that s just terrible. you have known him a long time, haven t you? since seventh grade. steve: unbelievable. when you look at the number you and i were talking during the commercial i remember in the 180s and 190s there were a lot of murders drug related. what is going on now because it really seems different? that s great question and honestly i m not sure if any of us have the answer for it i know it s very troubling.
