Japan dominates Asia and Oceania Olympic and Paralympic qualifier in Tokyo

Friday, 7 May 2021 The host nation dominated the final day of racing at the Asia and Oceania Olympic and Paralympic qualifier on the regatta course due to hold Tokyo 2020 rowing events. In ideal racing conditions, following the bad weather which wiped out the opening day’s competition, Japan won all four of the Olympic races in this World Rowing event at the Sea Forest Waterway on Tokyo Bay. Shiho Yonekawa was the women’s single sculls winner with Ryuta Arakawa finishing first in the men’s single sculls. The lightweight women’s double sculls was won by Chiaki Tomita and Ayami Oishi, who competed at the Rio 2016 Olympics after winning this event five years ago, while Naoki Furuta and Mitsuo Nishimura won for the men.

Asia and Oceania Olympic and Paralympic rowing qualifier underway in Tokyo Thursday, 6 May 2021 Japan’s Chiaki Tomita and Ayami Oishi secured direct qualification to the lightweight women’s double sculls final at the Asia and Oceania Olympic and Paralympic qualifier in Tokyo. The pairing competed at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games after winning the Asian qualification regatta and appear on course to replicate the feat for Tokyo 2020. Tomita and Oishi finished their heat in a winning time of 8min 10.59sec at the Sea Forest Waterway venue which is set to be used as the rowing course at this year s Games. The Japanese pair’s effort was nearly 16 seconds faster than their nearest rivals.
