Eastland County Sheriff Resigns Following Misconduct Allegations
EASTLAND, TX – The Eastland County Sheriff has announced Thursday that he will resign following misconduct allegations.
According to KTXS, on May 20, the Eastland County Sheriff Chad Roberts announced that he will be stepping down as the sheriff beginning May 24.
The following is a press release about the issue from the Eastland County DA: On January 21, 2021, allegations of misconduct by former City Manager Chad Roberts regarding public information requests under the Texas Open Records Act were submitted to the Criminal District Attorneys Office through the City of Ranger’s legal counsel. These allegations of misconduct occurred while Roberts was employed by Ranger as City Manager/Chief of Police. The Criminal District Attorneys Office through its elected District Attorney Russ Thomason followed state protocol and requested the assistance of the Texas Rangers. Billy Joe ‘B.J.’ Roberts
HAMPTON Sheriff Billy Joe “B.J.” Roberts, 70, peacefully departed this life Saturday, Dec. 26, 2020. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earnest and Viola Roberts; and sister, Nora Barnwell.
A native of South Carolina, Sheriff Roberts was educated in Hampton and earned his high school diploma from Phenix High School. During his high school years, he played football and basketball, and later earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Management from Hampton University. He completed the Northwestern University Public Safety Management School in Illinois, the National Sheriffs’ Institute (NSI) program in Colorado, the Virginia Sheriffs’ Institute Chief Executive Training Program and Civic Leadership Institute.
Roberts was Virginia’s longest serving sheriff and had announced plans to retire Jan. 8.
“Under Roberts’ leadership, the Hampton Sheriff’s Office demonstrated a Commitment to Excellence. In 2009 the office was awarded the coveted Nationally Accredited Triple Crown award, achieving simultaneous accreditation from the American Correctional Association, the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement.
In June 2010, Sheriff Roberts was sworn in as the 69th president of the National Sheriff’s Association (NSA). Roberts’ swearing in as president of NSA marked the first and only African-American in the 70 year history of the organization to preside over its 18,990 members.
