Council To Hold Public Hearing On Former Rec Bowl Property

December 15, 2020 Sheldon, Iowa When the Sheldon City Council meets this Wednesday, December 16th, they’ll hold a Public Hearing on matters concerning the former Rec Bowl site at the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Park Street. The Rec Bowl/Budd-Z’s building was destroyed in an arson fire in 2013. In 2015 the city cleaned up the property at taxpayer expense. The main principal owner of the property died in January of this year. The current occupant of the property is Sheldon Power and Equipment, but the ownership issues mean the property is undevelopable and not generating property taxes. As a result, it is considered “blighted” under Sheldon’s Urban renewable authority. The city hopes to resolve this issue and Wednesday’s Public Hearing is the next step in that process.
