Wiltshire Council responds to most StreetLink alerts

Wiltshire Council responded to most rough sleeper alerts during pandemic Nearly 80 per cent of all rough sleeper reports were responded to by Wiltshire Council since the pandemic began. According to StreetLink, an app where members of the public can connect rough sleepers people with local services to support them, said that between March 1 and December 31 last year, they had received 104 alerts in Wiltshire. Of these 104 alerts about rough sleepers, Wiltshire Council responded to 79 or 76 per cent of those received. It is important to note that the 104 alerts do not represent as many individuals sleeping rough. A spokesman for StreetLink said: “Sometimes several alerts are received for the same person, or a person may leave and then return to the streets.”

Help for homeless as temperatures to fall below zero degrees

Emergency accommodation for rough sleepers will be made available by the council as temperatures are due to fall over the next few nights. Wiltshire Council has a statutory duty to trigger its Severe Weather Emergency Provisions (SWEP) for anyone who is sleeping rough when the weather is predicted to fall to zero degrees or below for three consecutive nights.  Temperatures are forecast to be at sub-zero temperatures over the coming week and as a result, the council is offering overnight accommodation for those affected. According to the local authority, all rough sleepers known to Wiltshire Council have had an offer of accommodation and are reminded that this help remains available.

The agency had said that flooding was expected on the upper reaches of the River Avon from Chippenham to Melksham – and urged people to move pets and cars to safety and turn off gas, electricity and water. “River levels have risen at the Great Somerford river gauge as a result of heavy rainfall,” the Environment Agency said. “Consequently, flooding of property is imminent. Areas most at risk are properties at Reybridge [near Lacock].
