The Maryland General Assembly operated like never before in 2021 but still passed significant measures that included a multi-billion dollar COVID-19 relief plan, historic police reform, legalized sports wagering, and a wave of overrides of the governor’s vetoes.
Only elected officials, portions of their staff, and a limited number of media could be present at the State House this session to help minimize any potential spread of COVID-19.
With none of the general public or usual lobbyists present, lawmakers worked to make up for time lost in the 2020 session, which ended early during the start of the pandemic.
“We’re sending a strong and clear message: While we may have disagreements on certain issues, we can work together in a bipartisan way for the people of Maryland,” Gov. Larry Hogan, R, said during a bill signing Tuesday with House Speaker Adrienne Jones, D-Baltimore County, and Senate President Bill Ferguson, D-Baltimore.

HOGAN BUDGET EMPHASIZES TAX RELIEF, EDUCATION: Gov. Larry Hogan Tuesday previewed his administration’s FY 2022 budget proposal that, he said, will prioritize tax relief for individuals and small businesses and include record investments in education, the environment and public safety, Bryan Renbaum of Maryland Reporter writes.
Hogan (R) says his budget offers more money for education including record investments in school construction and a coronavirus relief package that would provide a $750 economic stimulus payment to the state’s poorest residents, Ovetta Wiggins of the Post reports.

Colorado’s nine electors cast ballots for Biden and Harris
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) Colorado’s nine presidential electors cast ballots Monday, formally choosing President-Elect Joe Biden and Vice President-Elect Kamala Harris on behalf of the people of Colorado.
Monday, the electors were sworn in on a promise to pick Biden and Harris and vote in accordance with Colorado’s popular vote. The Nov. 3 election was the first presidential election since the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that states can punish faithless electors who vote against the popular vote winner.
“Electors play an important role in reaffirming that the people, everyday American people, decide who the leaders are of our nation,” said Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold.
