If you think for a moment, its obvious that there is a vast benefit to you in having a friend or a lover. You choose relationships with people who are important to you. You choose to give your affection to people who mean something to you. Now, if you heeded the altruists actually gave your love, or try to give your love indiscriminately, that would indeed be selfless to love a stranger or an inning is an act of self abrogation. But genuine love is not selfless. It is not dispensed as charity.
