williams. good evening, it has been a tough summer in the nation s third largest city, 360 murders in chicago, so far this year. and now in the city schools, the fall season is off to a very tough start. this morning, the teacher s union in the city of chicago went out on strike. it leaves students running for a place to go and parents with no options, just as the union said it had no other option. and like any big city population in our country, nothing is simple, a complicated system with hundreds of thousands of innocent victims. there was a big protest ralecal called there by the union in chicago, we start with the story. reporter: brian, the crowd is starting to thin some what, but thousands of teachers have been walking in the streets of downtown chicago. and police were so concerned about it they blocked off the street, right in the middle of this big city s rush hour, causing a lot of concern for many people. but this is right near the headquarters of where the ci

good evening. great to have you on this sunday night, and we begin here with those images from right here in new york city this weekend. tens of millions come to visit the sites every year, but this you rarely see, not one, but two tornados this weekend. tonight the cleanup is under way as many ask, what s going on? and look at this, the images of the cleanup in brooklyn, new york, and from queens, the tornadoes touching down minutes apart, and you hear about the warnings in tornado alley. some new yorkers actually got warnings on their cell phones from their phone company. not very common that it happens here, and so tonight abc meteorologist ginger zee with the images, the science and forecast for the week ahead. oh, my god, look at the tornado. reporter: not only is that a tornado, but it s a tornado in new york city. one of two that ripped through queens and brooklyn. the first, born around 11:00 a.m. on the water, then hitting land slicing through the beach community

we begin this monday with the new school year in chicago about to come to a screeching halt. that s right. this morning, teachers in the nation s third largest school system are set to go on strike for the first time in 25 years. months of tense negotiations over pay and job security collapsed late last night. and the strike will mean no classes for more than 400,000 students and no paychecks for 29,000 teachers and support staff. mayor rahm emanuel blamed the teachers calling the strike unnecessary. we are making good progress. this is no time to have a strike, given the issues are not financial, two issues that we can finish. 144 schools will be open to serve breakfast and lunch and offer some form of supervision. as parents scramble to make other plans. we will be following the stories throughout the morning on abc. also developing overnight, new momentum for president obama after last week s convention. he is now ahead in some new poll numbers and also in campai
