National Weather Service hosts training for Florida storm spotters

The recent cold snap had work Zoom calls filled with weather-related chatter. When I was in my North Carolina hometown earlier this year, we got 9 inches of rain in 24 hours, so I naturally told everyone I knew. During severe weather, the National Weather Service in Melbourne relies on residents to watch the weather and report back hazardous conditions. That’s one of the ways they’re able to get hyperlocal when warning about severe storms and other hazards. The weather service is a series of virtual classes to train these so-called spotters,  with a basic and an advanced class set for Monday. The training is through SKYWARN, a nationwide volunteer program started by the weather service in the 1970s.
