A University of Florida distinguished professor has been named co-chair of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine s 2023-32 Decadal Survey on Biological and Physical Sciences Research in Space, a NASA-sponsored guide for the next 10 years worth of scientific study priorities.
Rob Ferl, a professor of horticultural sciences with UF s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences and principal investigator with the UF Space Plants Lab, will co-chair the committee tasked to create the guide with Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Krystyn J. Van Vliet.
Together, he said, they will gather about 50 scientists to review as many research ideas as possible over the next year, focusing on topics like life support systems for astronauts, technologies to get people back on the moon and experiments they might conduct there.
