A motorboat found itself on ice Sunday evening at Schwatka Lake . and not in a good way.
At approximately 6:15 p.m., members of the Whitehorse Fire Department responded to Schwatka Lake for a report of a boat
stuck in ice.
“Upon arrival and investigation, it was determined that a boat was stuck in ice with people on board,” the fire department said.
“The ice had shifted and trapped the boat. Firefighters crossed open water with an inflatable craft and proceeded to break up the ice using pike poles.
“Once enough ice had been broken, the boat was able to move and motor through to open water.”

Yukoners are being asked to avoid going on the ice on Schwatka Lake starting Wednesday as ice breaks and fast flowing water are possible.

Yukoners are being asked to avoid going on the ice on Schwatka Lake starting Wednesday as ice breaks and fast flowing water are possible.
Over the next week, water levels are expected to fall at Schwatka Lake as Yukon Energy continues to increase the flow of water through Miles Canyon and the Whitehorse dam as part of the effort to lower water levels on Marsh Lake, according to a news release.

The chair of an advisory group on managing salmon stocks in Yukon says there are lots of questions to be answered about why fewer salmon seem to be reaching and passing through the Whitehorse fish ladder.
City council has adopted its anticipated capital budget expenditures for 2021 through to the end of 2024.
The capital budget for 2021 includes $31 million in money already confirmed with an additional $21.4 million in projects requiring external funding that still has to be approved.
The bylaw required to adopt the three-year capital expenditure program received second and third readings at council’s meeting on Monday.
Of the $31 million in confirmed spending, $9.1 is coming from city reserves, and the rest is flowing from external sources such as federal gas tax funding.
The variety of projects identified for next year includes the replacement of the Robert Service Campground building at an estimated cost of $2.9 million.
