The first major championship on the local men’s amateur golf schedule is in the record book, and a few interesting and unexpected story lines developed.
Long-hitting Steve Quillinan Jr., who moved to Boston a couple of years ago yet still is a member of the Country Club of Troy, claimed his third Tri-County Match Play Championship last weekend at Colonie Golf & Country Club with a 3-and-2 win over Tom McGinn, a player largely forgotten except by his many friends.

Golf is no longer the No. 1 priority in Bryan Bigley’s life. After more than a dozen years of chasing his dream of making it on the PGA Tour, the Schalmont High School and Siena College graduate doesn’t have to worry about making the cut in order to earn enough money to keep his career afloat.
Now living just outside of San Francisco, Bigley is married, enjoys his role as a stay-at-home dad for his two stepsons, and hits the little white ball around just for fun these days.

Although match play is a format that allows many competitors to be more aggressive on certain shots and puts the emphasis more on one’s opponent than on the course, Dan Russo doesn’t change his focus much at all.
Russo, the 63-year-old member of Schuyler Meadows, is the area’s all-time leader in major tournament victories among amateurs. Russo certainly knows how to win in golf, and he will play his normal game next weekend when the annual Tri-County Golf Association Match Play Championship is contested Friday through Sunday at Colonie Golf & Country Club.

A youthful Siena College men’s golf team appears to be in top form just in time for this weekend’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship at Disney’s Magnolia Golf Course in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Siena winds up tournament play Sunday.
The Saints, who last captured the MAAC title back in 2016, hadn’t won a regular-season tournament title since 2007-08, but they pulled off a mild upset by winning the Hartford/Gillette Ridge Invitational at the Gillette Ridge Golf Club last week in Bloomfield, Connecticut. Siena shot a 20-over-par 308 in the 18-hole event to edge MAAC rival Fairfield by 10 strokes and Trinity College by 11.
