AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) Days after announcing a plan to buy four other hospitals for $950 million, Atlanta-based Piedmont Healthcare has signed an agreement to take over Augusta’s University Hospital system, pushing deeper into a statewide expansion.
Directors of the three-hospital University system announced Wednesday that they have approved a nonbinding letter of intent. Jim Davis, CEO of the nonprofit University system, says the merger could be completed late this year or early next year. Davis tells WJBF-TV that University is likely to change its name to Piedmont-Augusta.
Hospitals have been merging to seek greater market power in bargaining for reimbursement rates with insurers. University began seeking a partner in 2019, saying remaining independent would have been difficult with payment rates declining and costs rising. Piedmont also offers access to technology and data systems University can’t afford.
Momentum for McIlroy, few others going into PGA Championship

Rory McIlroy knows as well as anyone how quickly fortunes can change in golf.
Until winning at his happy hunting ground of Quail Hollow last week, McIlroy had gone 18 months without winning anywhere, the second-longest dry spell of his career. Now he’s the betting favorite for the PGA Championship, which starts next Thursday at Kiawah Island.
It’s not much different from nine years ago, the last time the PGA Championship went to the South Carolina shores of Kiawah Island.
McIlroy was practically an afterthought. In the three months leading up to the final major of 2012, he had missed the cut in four of the eight tournaments he played worldwide and didn’t seriously contend in the other four. His best finish in a major that year was a tie for 40th at the Masters.
South Carolina elections director to resign at end of year

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) The executive director of the South Carolina Election Commission will leave her post at the end of the year after overseeing the state’s ballot box process for nearly two decades, she wrote in her resignation letter.
Marci Andino informed the board’s chairman on Wednesday that her last day would be Dec. 31, according to the letter obtained by news outlets. It doesn’t specify a specific reason for leaving.
“I have dedicated most of my life’s work to ensuring my fellow South Carolinians had the opportunity to vote in fair and impartial elections,” Andino wrote. “As I near the fulfillment of the duties of my current post, I stand proud of our accomplishments. And as I plan for future opportunities, I will always remain steadfast in my dedication to the preservation of our democracy.”
