BJP candidate Sharanu Salagar defeated his nearest rival Mala B. Narayanrao of the Congress by an impressive margin of 20,629 votes. The byelection to the constituency, which was necessitated by the demise of incumbent representative in the Assembly B. Narayanrao, was held on April 17 and counting was taken up on Sunday.
Counting began at B.V. Bhumareddy College in Bidar at 8 a.m. as scheduled after the strongroom where the EVMs were kept was opened in the presence of candidates and election and security officers, including Bidar Deputy Commissioner R. Ramachandran and Superintendent of Police Nagesh D.L.

Polling is underway in the three byelection-bound constituencies of Belagavi (Lok Sabha), Maski and Basavakalyan (Assembly) in Karnataka.
Polling got off to a slow start and picked up around 11 a.m. in all the constituencies.
BJP candidate Mangala Angadi, her daughters Dr Spoorti Patil and Shraddha Shettar voted in the government school in Vishweshvarayya Nagar. She performed pooja to the EVM before voting.
At Belagavi, Congress candidate Satish Jarkiholi, his wife and children voted in the government school in Gokak. MES candidate Shubham Shelke voted in the government Marathi school on Mahadwar road. BJP MLA Abhay Patil and his wife voted in the government Marathi school in Basavana Galli in the old city.

Polling in the Basavakalyan byelection was almost peaceful without any incidents on Saturday.
It began at 7 a.m. and went on till 7 p.m. The turnout of voters, which was less in the initial hours, gradually picked up through the day. Disregarding the rising temperature, people enthusiastically participated in the high-voltage election that drew the attention of the State.
Congress candidate Mala B. Narayanarao, wife of B. Narayanarao whose death necessitated the byelection, visited the samadhi of her husband and paid homage in the morning before proceeding to vote. BJP candidate Sharanu Salagar offered puja at Basaveshwar Temple and cast his vote at polling station 99A in Basavakalyan APMC yard. The byelection-bound Basavakalyan witnessed intense political activities and administrative preparations a day ahead of the scheduled poll on Friday.
Since the public campaigning ended on Thursday, most of the candidates, including Mala B. Narayanarao of Congress, Sharanu Salagar of BJP, Sayed Yasrub Ali Quadri of JD(S), and BJP rebel Mallikarjun Khuba, who is in the fray as an Independent, visited houses and commercial establishments and appealed to voters.
Teru Maidan in the town, where the mustering work was done, saw thousands of polling staff and security personnel collecting polling material and making preparations.
