Judge orders Sarpy County commissioners to delay naming new treasurer

By Julia Bertino May 28, 2021 (Sarpy County, NE) The Sarpy County Board of Commissioners tables a resolution to appoint Trace Jones as the new Sarpy County Treasurer. The resolution was tabled after District Court Judge Geoffrey C. Hall issued a preliminary injunction, requested by former Sarpy County Treasurer Brian Zuger. The county says the injunction does not reinstate Zuger, but prevents the Board from naming a permanent replacement until Zuger’s legal challenge is heard or until the injunction is lifted. Zuger was removed from office after a state auditor’s report found several discrepancies in how the treasurer’s office had distributed funds to schools and cities.

(WOWT) - After meeting in closed session on Tuesday morning, the Sarpy County board moved forward with its hearing in the afternoon on whether to remove its treasurer. Last month, state auditors said Sarpy County Treasurer Brian Zuger overpaid or underpaid millions of dollars in public funds to different school districts. Zuger argues that the violations started under the previous treasurer. On Monday night, an injunction was requested in the matter with Zuger’s attorney arguing that the board doesn’t have the power to remove an elected official from office.

Sarpy County Board to start legal action against County Treasurer

By Julia Bertino Mar 9, 2021 (Sarpy County, NE) The Sarpy County Board of Commissioners votes unanimously to begin legal action against Sarpy County Treasurer Brian Zuger. Tuesday s move follows the Nebraska Auditor of Public Accounts’ attestation of the Treasurer’s Office which the county says found, untimely and miscalculated distributions to school districts and other entities, deficiencies in balancing and reconciliation procedures and other issues. The report did not find any missing funds. The report showed that over $12.5 million in public funds had been impacted. In some cases, school districts were either severely overpaid or underpaid in property tax disbursements.
