Vadodara: Thousands of people staying on the banks of rivers were shifted to safer locations in the central Gujarat districts on Sunday as rising wate.
Thousands were evacuated from low-lying areas of Gujarat after heavy rains caused flooding in the districts of Ahmedabad, Anand and Bharuch. The downpour also caused rivers Narmada and Mahisagar to overflow, resulting in flooding in nearby areas.
Ignoring heavy rain warnings and farmers’ needs, the BJP government refused to release water from the Sardar Sarovar dam till Sunday, eventually leading to ‘large-scale’ damage, the Congress said. The AAP too criticised the government’s actions.
Gujarat has already received nearly 90.8 per cent of its average annual rainfall with Kutch and Saurashtra recording 137 per cent and 111 per cent rainfall, respectively.
Since Sunday, more than 9,613 people have been relocated, while 207 have been rescued from Narmada, Bharuch, Vadodara, Dahod and Panchmahal districts in Gujarat
