Partners Start Using Different Language Months Before They Break Up, Study Shows

Partners Start Using Different Language Months Before They Break Up, Study Shows 3 FEBRUARY 2021 There are hidden signs of an impending break-up up to three months before it occurs, a new study has found - you just need to pay attention to the language people are using. And not just when partners are talking about their relationship, either. New research analysed more than 1 million posts on Reddit and showed that words people used in conversations across all kinds of different subjects shifted significantly - sometimes months before the fate of their relationship was ultimately decided.   This is the first study to look into whether or not natural language data might be able to predict a break-up, and how long the changes in people s language patterns last.

Language Patterns Can Predict A Looming Breakup, Study Finds

While it may be true that actions speak louder than words, words still hold weight. In fact, a new study published in the The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin, reviewed more than 1 million Reddit posts by 6,800 users. Specifically, they looked at users who had announced a breakup in the subreddit channel r/BreakUps and analyzed their posts from the year before and the year after the split. By analyzing the language used in the posts, researchers found breakups begin to affect people and the way they talk up to three months before the split occurs, and the aftermath tends to last for about six months. And no, the main linguistic indicator was not the sharing of sad song lyrics or sappy quotes it was actually a much more subtle use of pronouns.
