Woolwich Leisure Centre: Demolition begins at Wilko store

Demolition has begun on the site of the new Woolwich Leisure Centre, as public feedback following consultation into the scheme is revealed. The existing Wilko store, on General Gordon Square, is being knocked down to make way for the council-funded project. The latest consultation found that a 25-metre swimming pool and café are among the top facilities welcomed by residents, as locals called for a public housing requirement among the 450-500 new homes to be built. Cllr Sarah Merrill, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Growth, said: “The Council is making a big investment in Woolwich across a number of regeneration projects that will rejuvenate the town centre, create jobs, attract visitors and boost the local economy.

Local writer releases Woolwich-based podcast story | This Is Local London

Woolwich A new short story set in Woolwich and written by a local writer has been released as a podcast today. Woolwich has been honoured as the setting and inspiration of a new podcast story, written by a local writer. Poet and novelist Merrie Joy Williams said she wanted to honour her memories of the place, the quaint tea shops, cinemas and department stores, the arsenal and the frankness of the people. But also their hopes for new developments, like Crossrail and the emerging, burgeoning arts scene. In Between Days is one of seven new works of fiction commissioned for Historic England’s High Street Tales, a new weekly podcast series and e-book inspired by local high streets.
