Responding to the announcement today that G7 countries will work with industry to expand the production of affordable COVID-19 vaccines, Oxfam’s Health Policy Manager, Anna Marriott, said:
“The G7 has failed to take back control of COVID vaccines from the pharmaceutical corporations that continue to decide who lives and who dies. Relying on them to voluntarily share their vaccine recipes has so far denied access to these life-saving tools for billions of people.
“Instead the G7 should urgently put their support behind the waiver of intellectual property protections on COVID-19 vaccines that over 100 countries, led by India and South Africa, have been demanding for six months, and since which over two million people have lost their lives to coronavirus.

In response to calls for a waiver of Trade and Intellectual Property Rules (TRIPS) for COVID-19 vaccines, which is backed by more than 100 mostly developing countries, being blocked again at World Trade Organisation talks by rich countries, Oxfam’s Health Policy Manager, Anna Marriott, said:
“This is a massive missed opportunity to speed up and scale up the production of lifesaving vaccines worldwide by waiving the intellectual property barriers that prevent more qualified manufacturers joining the effort.
Monopolies causing ‘artificial rationing’ in Covid-19 crisis as 3 biggest global vaccine giants sit on sidelines

The supply of safe and effective vaccines for all is being artificially rationed because of the protection of exclusive rights and monopolies of pharmaceutical corporations, the People’s Vaccine Alliance said today.
The alliance warned that the three biggest vaccine companies in the world are largely sitting on the sidelines – they currently plan to produce enough Covid-19 vaccines for only 1.5 per cent of the global population in 2021. A number of other large manufacturers are not yet producing any of the successful, proven Covid-19 vaccines.
