attempts. good morning. and welcome to way too early. on this thursday, july 21st. i m jonathan lemire. thanks for joining us. we begin with tonight s eighth hearing from the house january 6th committee investigating the attack on the capitol. it is set for 8:00 p.m. eastern and is expected to last about two hours. the committee says it is likely to be the final of this round of hearings. but more are likely to be scheduled around the release of two reports later this year. the committee chair bennie thompson will lead the hearing and he will do so remotely after testing positive for covid on tuesday. the hearing will focus on what the committee calls a former president trump s dereliction of duty. and a minute by minute account of what happened inside the white house between trump s rally at the ellipse and his tweet finally telling the capitol rioters to go home. the washington post is reporting this morning that the public could see outtakes from trump s january 7t
overturn the election results. that man is donald trump s top white house lawyer pat cipollone. he sat down for a transcribed interview under oath with investigators this morning. as far as we can tell, that interview or that meeting is ongoing at this hour. punch bowl news reports this about the parameters of today s testimony from cipollone, quote, sources tell us that the select committee does not have an agreement about what investigators can or cannot ask him. prior to hutchinson s testimony the panel had discussed an arrangement with cipollone for an on the record interview, but cipollone backed away from it, sources tell us. cipollone is expected to claim executive privilege over conversations he had with trump, but there is plenty that the committee is interested in outside of that category. for example, we expect cipollone will be asked about conversations with former white house chief of staff mark meadows. the possibility that cipollone could provide gamechanging i
the results and he should con seed. the video also showed evidence that trump called on his supporters to march on the cal toll was planned. cnn correspondent jessica schneider joins us from washington. so what are you learning? interestingly, alison, chairman betty thomson just talked about this. he says the committee is finally handed over some materials to the doj, but it s mostly pertaining to the fake elector scheme. so all of that from the hundreds of interviews they have conducted they have now handed over the doj. this has been about how much the committee would share. now it seems those records as it pertains to the elector scheme, those are finally being shared possibly with more to come. what s even more significant here is vice cheney s chair of possible witness tampering. she s brought it up twice now. she says the committee alerted doj that trump tried to contact a witness and the witness alerted their attorney who then informed the committee that this phone

that hearing will take place after the committee has videotaped the testimony of pat cipollone. cipollone, think, is the trump white house s top lawyer. he s a man who, at least as far as we know, appears to have pushed back on some of the most dangerous and brazen ideas conceived of by the ex-president and his closest allies as they worked to overturn the results of the 2020 election. cipollone also held the same job as john dean whose legendary 1973 testimony was a turningpoint in the watergate investigation. here is what january 6 investigator john wood had to say right here on msnbc about the tremendous significance of the committee getting an interview with cipollone. it was really important that he would eventually end up testifying before the committee and on the record and videotaped so the american people can see it. i m glad that is coming together this friday so hopefully the committee will show some of the key clips of that interview during a hearing next week.
