Annual Ride of Silence returns to islands to recognize cyclists, more By TIFFANY REPECKI / trepecki@breezenewspapers.com - | May 18, 2021 An annual event on Sanibel planned for this week will commemorate cyclists who have been injured or killed while riding a bike, as well as raise awareness about the importance of sharing the road. The 12th event for the islands, the Ride of Silence will be held on May 19 at 7 p.m. starting out at Matzaluna The Italian Kitchen. Organized by the Sanibel Bicycle Club, Billy’s Bikes and Matzaluna, the route will take participants to the bike shop and then back and forth over the Sanibel Causeway.

Annual Ride of Silence planned for islands By SANIBEL BICYCLE CLUB - | May 7, 2021 The Sanibel Bicycle Club, Billy’s Bikes and Matzaluna The Italian Kitchen will host the annual Ride of Silence for the islands on May 19 at 7 p.m. leaving from the restaurant, at 1200 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel. The worldwide event takes place on the third Wednesday of May every year. Club members, friends, neighbors and the community are invited to take part in the silent event to honor fellow cyclists who have been killed or injured. The short slow-paced ride will travel over two bridges on the Sanibel Causeway to the turnaround point underneath the Causeway and then return to the restaurant. Helmets are required, and bike lights are strongly encouraged. Participants should plan to arrive no later than 6:45 p.m. to sign a waiver. The city is distributing educational Bike or Hike Sanibel brochures to educate cyclists, pedestrians and motorists of state and city laws when biking, hiking or driving on island. The development and printing of the map and brochure, which includes a map of Sanibel’s Shared Use Path System, are grant funded. To bring awareness to the live cameras on-island and assist in navigating traffic this season, the city strongly encourages residents, business owners, workers and visitors to download the Sanibel Bound app. It allows users to view live street cameras located at key intersections. I have known him for 20 years, since he retired as vice president and treasurer of Owens-Corning in Toledo, Ohio, and moved to Sanibel. Soon after he moved and established his elder law practice, I became aware of the many hours he spent using his expertise to do pro bono work for older people who needed his help. His extensive financial background as a financial executive and certified public accountant with nationally recognized companies has been well known, making him eminently qualified to help direct the financial future of Sanibel. In addition, he has been an integral part of the community as president of the Committee for the Islands, president of the Sanibel Bicycle Club, and serving on the Parks and Recreation Committee.
