President Joseph R. Biden delivered a spark of hope in the early days of his presidency when he signed an executive order promising a government-wide approach to the disproportionate pollution burdens placed on the poor and communities of color.
The Pennsylvania Council of Churches, along with partner faith and environmental organizations, are encouraged by the president’s nod toward environmental justice. His order promises to reshape how the federal government works across its many agencies, acknowledging the intersection of policies and issues across communities, regions, and populations that necessitates an integration of efforts across the board. We hope it delivers.

On an extremely hot summer evening in 2017, the deafening sound of gunshots and the sound of squealing wheels jolted my husband and I out of what had been a peaceful evening at home. We ran to the door to see a black SUV speeding away as children screamed on the city playground across the street.
Hearing gunshots in the distance had been a disconcerting part of my life since moving to uptown Harrisburg in late 1996, but it never happened so close to home. The shooter, firing from a vehicle passing in front of our house, emptied an entire clip in the direction of a crowded basketball court. Miraculously only one youth was hit, a non-life-threatening injury to his lower leg. The cars dented and windows shattered from bullets probably prevented more injuries to those on the court, damage that might not have been so easily repaired.

HARRISBURG, PA Religious leaders statewide joined Gov. Tom Wolf this week in a big holiday ask: Please stay home for your holiday worship and religious celebrations.
Wolf issued a statement this week asking Pennsylvanians to take COVID-19 precautions and help one another stay safe during the upcoming holiday season. After a difficult year like this one, I know that we all want to take comfort in our family and religious traditions during the holidays, Gov. Wolf said. But the truth is that COVID-19 is still as dangerous as ever right now, and the best thing we can do to protect our loved ones is to worship and celebrate at home this year.
