Sandra Reed moved to Knowlton 11 years ago expecting to enjoy a peaceful retirement, however, it quickly turned into a never-ending dispute with her neighbours, the town of Brome Lake, and property owner Michael Murray.
Reed, a 71-year-old former real estate agent from Markham, Ontario, told The Record that everything was fine when she first arrived in the small town. But it all went downhill, and has since spiralled out of control, when her neighbours, a family of four, moved out.
In the beginning, it was a quiet family with two kids, according to Reed. “The kids used to come over here and see me, and it was lovely. I didn’t know how much trouble was ahead of me,” said Reed. The family lived in the modest house beside her for four years.

The Reed family, neighbors, supporters and activists from Houston and Austin gathered April 17 in the historic Kerr Community Center and Park in Bastrop, Texas, for their monthly event for Rodney Reed.
Reed had been set for execution in November 2019, but was granted a stay by Texas’ highest criminal court with just five days to spare. This was based on an appeal that Reed did not commit a 1996 murder and was in fact innocent.
The Bastrop gathering included making signs for Reed’s upcoming July 19 evidentiary hearing, signing Mother’s Day cards for women on Texas death row and a screening of the 2019 documentary, “A Plea for Justice,” that lays out the case for Reed’s innocence.
For the third time, an appeal hearing for death row inmate Rodney Reed has been rescheduled in the 21st District Court in Bastrop County.
After initially being moved from September to February, and then from February to May, Reed’s evidentiary hearing has now been rescheduled to July 19, according to court records.
Reed, who was convicted of capital murder in 1998 for the strangulation death of Stacey Stites in Bastrop County two years earlier, has maintained his innocence and is seeking to overturn his conviction.
This appeal hearing was originally granted for Reed after he received a stay of execution in November 2019.
