The premise is deceptively simple. It is a cabaret show about the fabulous and dramatic lives of a songwriter and a performer at the close of the golden age of Broadway. The performer awaits his lost love in a shadowy, gilded nightclub. The fact that the love is also a man keeps the “theater about the theater” trope from going stale. The audience should sit back and expect entertainment, interaction, strife, and ultimately, persevering love.

Signature Theatre’s third production of this season opened virtually this week on Marquee TV. “Midnight at the Never Get” was originally developed in 2015. With book, lyrics and music by Mark Sonnenblick, it was conceived by Sam Bolen, Max Friedman, and Mark Sonnenblick, and Matthew Gardiner directs.
Sometimes you see a show that is exactly what you expected. Sometimes it is a disappointment and other times you feel like you saw something really special. “Midnight at the Never Get” is one of those shows that far exceeds your expectations by miles.
To say this is about a gay couple in the 1960s would be a disservice. This is a love story and a beautifully told one. That it is about two men is incidental because it could be about any couple in love. From April 30 – June 21, 2021, Signature Theatre will virtually present “Midnight at the Never Get” with book, lyrics, and music by Mark Sonnenblick and conceived by Sam Bolen, Max Friedman, and Mark Sonnenblick. The show is directed by Matthew Gardiner. It stars Sam Bolen, Christian Douglas and Bobby Smith.
The playas first presented in April 2015 with the name “Midnight at the Rialto.” It then was produced by Don’t Tell Mama and had its limited run extended. In 2016, the production received rave reviews at the New York Musical Festival, with sold out performances.
