A brush fire that has closed a portion of U.S. 60 just northeast of Globe burned 1,500 acres and was 0% contained as of Friday evening, according to officials.
The human-caused fire, dubbed the Copper Canyon Fire, was burning on both sides of the highway and was moving north and northeast as of Friday night, said the Arizona Department of Forestry and Fire Management.
Officials were trying to secure the north and northeast side of the fire, which was fueled by dry vegetation and winds, and protect nearby ranches.
The Arizona Department of Transportation said U.S. 60 was closed at west and eastbound lanes north of Globe, which is about an hour and a half east of Phoenix.
