Vehicles won t have access to portions of Winter St NE and Union St NE in the downtown area starting Aug. 7
in an attempt to aid bicyclists, pedestrians and vendors at the Salem Saturday Market.
The Salem City Council approved a plan Monday that closes portions of the neighboring streets during market hours to encourage alternative modes of transportation.
The Salem Saturday Market part of Salem Community Markets is held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Saturday, typically April through October.
The market takes place at 865 Marion St NE, on the corner of Summer and Marion, north of the Capital Mall. The market celebrated its 23rd anniversary this year.
