Clergy under surveillance? Pahiyangala Thero voices concern

Share: Colombo (News 1st); Venerable Pahiyangala Ananda Sagara Thero on Tuesday (09) filed a complaint with the Police Headquarters claiming he is receiving death threats for opposing environmental destruction. “The intelligence services, as well as the police and CID, are gathering information about us in order to tarnish our reputation,” the Venerable Thero told reporters. The Venerable Thero said there is a serious concern as to who is conducting surveillance impersonating police officers and warned this could also be an attempt to bring back the underworld and the white van culture. He also said since he continuously opposed the destruction caused to the environment under the present government, he is also facing threats adding the President and the Government must listen to the issues raised by activists.

No link between ECT & India's position at UNHRC; G. L. Peiris

Share: Colombo (News 1st); Minister (Professor) G. L. Peiris told reporters on Monday (17), there is no link between the East Container Terminal issue and India’s position on Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights Council session. ‘There are always issues when working with another country,’ said the Minister adding the issue on the East Container Terminal was not a reason for a rift to be created between India and Sri Lanka. He said the country is already discussing with India about the West Container Terminal and therefore, there is no reason to assume India would maintain a position that would negatively impact Sri Lanka at the UNHRC.

Sri Lanka's forest cover at 17 percent - environmentalist

Share: COLOMBO (News1st): Sri Lanka’s forest cover that stood at 82 percent in 1881 has dropped drastically to 17 percent, the Rain Forest Protectors of Sri Lanka movement has said. “The 1/2020 circular has been introduced through which nearly 700,000 forests have become vulnerable,” Hemantha Vithanage, the executive director of the Centre for Environmental Justice told reporters. Environmentalists convened a media briefing on Tuesday to highlight that the government’s decision to amend land-related laws have affected elephant habitats in the country. “When forest and wildlife officers visit these areas, they are helpless. They have been forced to not enact the laws and even remove longstanding cases,” Vithanage noted.
