This year, the foundation awarded $95,000 to 84 seminarians from eight countries.
âThis is the most that has ever been awarded, and we hope to increase it every year,â Sabrina Rizzo-Moots, business manager of the Sacred Heart Foundation, wrote in an email.
Ms. Rizzo-Moots also attributed âan excellent return on our investments as well as operating on a conservative budget, leaving a majority of our annual budget for scholarships,â for the record donations.
The Sacred Heart Foundation, established in 1967, supports the formation of priests for the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart. Itâs run by a team of volunteers and has been giving its scholarships since 1968.

Leon Joseph Cyr, a.k.a. Brother Leon, a religious Brother of the Sacred Heart, died Monday, July 19, 2021, at Overlook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Pascoag, RI.
The second of three children of the late Anthem and Nelida Cyr, Leon was born on March 5, 1935, in Grand Isle, Maine. He was 86 years old.
Brother Leon entered the Institute of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart in Pomfret, CT, on September 6, 1952. He professed his first vows on August 24, 1955, in Pomfret, and his final vows on June 25, 1961, at Mount Saint Charles Academy in Woonsocket, RI. He received both a Bachelor’s degree in history and a Master’s degree in the teaching of religion from St. Michael’s College in Winooski, VT, and an advanced certificate in Applied Theology from the University of California at Berkley, to assist him in serving the people of God throughout his 66-years as a Brother of the Sacred Heart.

Mary Elizabeth Flynn, 92, of Watertown passed away peacefully Saturday morning, March 13, 2021, at Samaritan Keep Home where she resided since August 2014.
Mary was born in Watertown on May 13, 1928, daughter of Robert J. and Veronica C. Repholz Easton and was a 1946 graduate of Immaculate Heart Academy. On February 4, 1950 she married William J. Flynn, Jr. at Holy Family Church with Rev. F. P. Shue officiating. Mr. Flynn died June 16, 2014.
She was a switchboard operator at Watertown High School and NY Telephone (Watertown & Fort Drum). Mary was more than a communicant of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church; she was an active participant and supporter of all things Sacred Heart. She was a Eucharistic Minister, President & long-time member of its Altar Rosary Society, Religious Education Teacher, President of Home & School, member of the choir, festival worker, and dance organizer (this one was a little selfish as she loved to dance with dad).
