Sanwo-Olu approves 21-year jail term for cultists

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Monday, approved a 21-year jail term for convicted cultists in the state.
Sanwo-Olu approved the jail term as he signed the bill for the Prohibition of Unlawful Societies and Cultism 2021 into Law at Lagos House, Ikeja
He also signed three other bills into law, which were the Lagos State Audit Service Commission (Amendment) Law of 2019, Lagos State Public Procurement Bill of 2021 and Coronavirus Pandemic Emergency Law of 2021.
According to him, the state has suffered the negative effects of unlawful societies and cultism and the new law seeks to make parents more responsible.

The ECOWAS Court of Justice has ordered the immediate release of a Colombian businessman of Lebanese descent, Alex Nain Saab Moran.
The court also ordered the payment of $200,000 as compensation for the moral prejudice suffered as a result of his arrest and incarceration.
Alex Saab has been in detention since June 12, 2020 after his arrest on the island of Sal. The Venezuelan government insists the action violated international norms because the arrest notice was issued after he was taken into custody.
In August 2020, a Cape Verde court approved the extradition of Saab to the United States. In January 2021, the Cape Verde Court of Appeal of Barlavento affirmed the ruling.

A Colombian man of Lebanese descent will be extradited to the US to face money laundering charges, a Cape Verde court ruled on Monday.
Special envoy to Venezuela Alex Nain Saab Moran, 48, will now be extradited to the US to face prosecution for money laundering offences related to a bribery scheme allegedly sanctioned by President Nicolas Maduro s government.
Under the scheme, Saab, who has often been described as President Nicolas Maduro s front man, and his associate Alvaro Pulido Vargas were awarded a government contract to construct low-income housing units, the Organised Crime and Corruption ReportingProject (OCCRP) reported.
