#BTEditorial - What 11-plus Exam are you talking about, Minister?

May 28, 2021 We heard and read the words of Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw earlier this week and we, like many Barbadians, are puzzled. The minister assured “worried’ Barbadians that a date for the Barbados Secondary School Entrance Examination, known more commonly as the 11-plus, will be announced within the next two weeks. Bradshaw, who was speaking at the Barbados Labour Party’s virtual conference said: “Don’t worry about the 11-plus because I know many people worry about the 11-plus. I told the country we were going to do the assessments on the children and the assessments are underway and I give the assurance that within the next two weeks or sooner we will have a position as far as the 11-plus date is concerned. That is our commitment to you.”

Dr Patriann Smith: Let's use literacy to open minds

Sunday 7 February 2021 Dr Patriann Smith, assistant professor in the College of Education at the University of South Florida in Tampa. PHOTOS COURTESY PATRIANN SMITH - While certain parts of the education system in the Caribbean seem more advanced than that of the US, the way it tends to approach literacy is often years behind other countries, says Dr Patriann Smith, assistant professor in the College of Education at the University of South Florida (USF) in Tampa, Florida. “It seemed that I had undertaken so much more work in my teacher-training diploma in TT than in my master s degree in the US. So, there is a difference in terms of the level of work that is being done across these contexts.
