What does science mean to you? Ruth Kinuthia is a researcher with World Agroforestry (ICRAF) Science to me is a process of continuous learning and understanding the environment in which I am in. I am most interested in identifying challenges facing communities and working with them to come up with solutions that they can take up as their own. For instance, my Master research focused on determining farmers’ perceptions of water-retention structures such as micro-basins and trenches and assessing whether the structures were effective in enhancing survival of agroforestry trees in arid and semi-arid areas of Ethiopia. The findings showed that farmers were receptive to the structures but they needed their capacity built to conserve soil and water as well as properly manage trees to enhance tree survival rates.
