josh shuffles his way to dinner with his new girlfriend, brandy, who says she has run away from home. i m used to my family screwing me over. i mean, there will always be a my heart that loves them because they re my blood, but josh told me this yesterday, enough with the blood bull [ muted ]. i need to make a family of choice. josh s group of friends has bonded into a family-like unit. we re basically like brothers. i mean, we watch out for each other. we share food, we share water. if there were one foundation they should establish for the homeless, it should be socks for the homeless. 24-year-old rodney, who s just enrolled in school, heads to the place where he s staying. for the past month, a friend has let him stay at her house for free. rodney says he will give her money when he finds work. the place that i sleep at it s a floor, well, i don t have my own bedroom.
from 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and go to school at night. i m starting school on march 8th, concord. good stuff. patient care technician. for me, i think it was a long road coming. and it s a long road going, but still it s a road i can travel. and look at the sky. oh, my god, it s beautiful. rodney, once was homeless. now has a full-time job and going to school. sounds good to me. what you think
i guess a neighbor called family services and said i was running outside barefooted. so they came out and said, oh, this is not fit for a child. the parents were fighting and everything so they just took us out and we went into foster placement. oh, look at the front of that car. when he was 19, his father died and for a brief time he lived with his mother in jacksonville. when she moved into a new apartment a few months later, she told him he couldn t live with her no more. that night i slept in the church and slept in the stairway, freezing cold. i went on the streets. became homeless, you know, officially first time being homeless. rodney has been on and off the streets for five years. recently, he applied to a couple of local schools to become a patient care technician, a health care professional who provides direct care to patients. i m like man, i m tired of this. i need to make something happen and make something happen fast,
it s warm. it gets cold. bam and anna are at risk of being arrested for trespassing if caught inside the nightclub. they also are under the threat of other homeless people coming into the club at night to rob or assault them. each night, they lock everything up before going to sleep. people come all through the night, people come knocking on that door. other bums. three people. we lock them out. we got everything secure where they can t come in here. so how do you all like our home? yep. that s home. well, going to the library. rodney is originally from camden, new jersey. he heads to the library where he spends most of his days. he says he was taken away from his parents when he was 12 years old, but he isn t sure why.
motion. after leaving the park, josh did not seek medical attention. things are looking up for 24-year-old runaway rodney. he s still homeless but he s been accepted into the patient care technician program at concord career college. this morning, he has an appointment to meet with a financial aid counselor. right now, i m seeking help from the state. they say i m approved already but i still, i don t have a job right now. rodney is prepared to juggle school and day labor to finish his program. i want to say, here, this is what i know. this is what i m good at. this is how i m going to do it. let s do this. you know what i m saying? they like people like that. i feel confident. i know i ll get it. you know what i m saying? that first day of school, when i get my scrubs, i ll put my purple scrubs on, i m going to look in the mirror i m going to say, that s what i m talking about.
