Rugby Australia is hoping an invitation to host the British and Irish Lions-Springboks series this year without a share of revenue will help secure Australia the votes to land the prize jewel in the rugby calendar, the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
The famous Lions side is due to tour South Africa this year but the COVID-19 pandemic in the country has put the series in major doubt, and contingency plans including playing without crowds and playing in the UK are being considered by the South Africans and Lions officials.
