After dipping its toes into the world of custom-car creation with 2017’s standalone Rolls-Royce Sweptail, the car-maker has announced the creation of a separate division to make bespoke cars from ‘truly personal commissions’ for wealthy buyers.
The luxury process is called ‘coachbuilding’ and it involves the use of a donor chassis on which a unique body and interior is built.
It is a method of production which brings the Goodwood-based car-maker back to its early twentieth century roots, before the dawn of automised industry.

Now, Rolls-Royce claims it is offering wealthy customers a chance to participate in that history: “Only the House of Rolls-Royce can offer its Coachbuild clients the inimitable opportunity to commission a product of future historical significance, that is as fundamentally unique as they are – and then participate in every detail of its creation.”

The car s large panoramic glass and 1920s-1930s design are unmistakably unique, but not everyone fell unanimously in love with the rear styling. Rolls-Royce has not officially announced any new one-off projects, but the UK automaker reportedly had several clients call to express their interest after the Sweptail was revealed four years ago. It looks like Rolls-Royce may not leave those requests unanswered for long. New division will specialise in one-offs and bespoke commissions for Rolls-Royce’s wealthiest customers
Rolls-Royce has established a new dedicated Coachbuild department for customers who want to create a one-off bespoke luxury car.
Picking up where the dramatic $17.5 million yacht-inspired Rolls-Royce Sweptail left off in 2017, the new Coachbuild division is claimed to hark back to Rolls-Royce built-to-order bespoke activities that date all the way back to the 1920s.
The existing Bespoke division, which already handles requests from customers to personalise their Rolls-Royce Ghost or Phantom, has also been expanded.
