Crews are set to begin work next week along the Houghton to Chassell rail-trail, repairing significant damage incurred during historic flooding that took place in the area in June 2018. The popular non-motorized trail has been closed since the flooding and will remain closed until at least August as reconstruction activities continue.
Work will take place at six sites, including repair of a bridge over the Pilgrim River and replacement of five culverts located between the Michigan Technological University golf course and Old U.S. 41 in Chassell.

MARQUETTE Michigan Department of Natural Resources Director Dan Eichinger recently approved two real estate transactions that have secured permanent trail easements, which will help ensure trail connectivity in the western Upper Peninsula.
These permanent trail easements, totaling 52 miles at a purchase price of $985,969, contribute to DNR and division goals and strategies by providing additional public recreation opportunities and securing trails for future generations.
“This certainly is good news,” said Ron Yesney, U.P. trails coordinator with the DNR’s Parks and Recreation Division. “Having permanent trail easements is an important advance for our western Upper Peninsula trail network.”
In the first of the two transactions, the DNR purchased 56 miles of 30-foot trail access in portions of Dickinson, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron and Ontonagon counties.

With the purchase of 67 miles of permanent trail easements, the connectivity of snowmobile and off-road vehicle trails in the western Upper Peninsula is secured for future generations.
The Department of Natural Resources recently bought 30-foot easements on several trail segments, including 56 miles primarily for snowmobiling and 11 miles for multi-use, for $985,969.
“This certainly is good news,” said Ron Yesney, U.P. trails coordinator with the DNR’s Parks and Recreation Division. “Having permanent trail easements is an important advance for our western Upper Peninsula trail network.”
